Japan Earthquake - Around My Family House

I arrived Tokyo, Japan last Tuesday, and since then we had many small earthquakes. On Friday, March 11th a massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Pacific Ocean nearby Northeastern Japan. At that time I was with my grandfather in Saitama-Prefecture, part of the Greater Tokyo Area. Fortunately my family and I are alright and our houses didn't have so much serious damage. Still now we cannot use water/gas, but can sleep in my bed.
I received many kind messages, and thank you so much for your concern.

DINNER in NY - "Americans spend more time eating, mostly while distracted"

For my current photo project, "DINNER in NY", I've been researching about the American time usage of meal time, and I found a post titled "Americans spend more time eating, mostly while distracted" written by Ayala Laufer-Cahana M.D..

After I read her post and looked through my photographs, I found out that many people ate dinner with either a computer, phone or TV in their sight, which was especially true when people ate dinner alone.
Initially, I started off with the speculation that many New Yorkers don't care about the quality of dinner time and rush through it because they are too busy. However, as mentioned in the research, I found out that the time taken to eat meals had actually gotten longer compared to 30 years ago, because we are spending more time doing something else while eating.

DINNER in New York
The term dinner refers to the main meal in a day. Consumption of food is as essential an element of life as sleeping for a human being. Most of the people who know the importance of eating habits care about the quality of food and nutrition. However, even if the food provides the necessary nutrition, that alone is not enough. The question is, what is a quality dinner? Having dinner is not just about eating food, but portrays many aspects of our lives.

A study in Public Health Nutrition which compiles data relating to American’s food-related time use over the past 30 years reveals some interesting trends: Eating as a primary activity declined in the past 30 years. On the other hand, eating as a secondary activity rose dramatically in the past 30 years. When we combine the primary and secondary eating time, we see that in total we’re spending an average of 25 or more minutes daily eating than we did 30 years ago. We now do almost 50 percent of our eating while concentrating on something else.

I would like to propose thinking what a dinner should be by objectively seeing diverse dinner situations. When you enjoy mealtimes, you’re more likely to eat better.
Let's think what we can do to enhance the pleasure of the table.

I contacted Dr. Ayala, and she gave me the following feedback.

"The photos tell the story so well: the people eating together are “breaking bread”, interacting and enjoying themselves. They probably have much more pleasure for every calorie they take in (and perhaps are more likely to eat better and less). Those eating alone, or while distracted, look rather bleak – they are doing no more than supplying their bodily needs.

The one exception is the baby eating with mom and Skype, but then again, the screen is more of a dining companion in this case. Absolutely powerful!"

Couple Portrait in NJ

Giselle and her husband, Fernando have so cute two dogs, and we decided to have shooting with their dogs. Pier A Park in Hoboken was a perfect location to shoot with dogs even though it was cold windy weather. For me it was first time to visit Hoboken, and once I saw the park with the great view, I became a fan of Hoboken. We enjoyed the shooting a lot and the photos can tell you how much fun we had!

The Beach in Governors Island

It was first time for me to go to Governors Island. We took Concert Ferries at The Battery Maritime Building. It was the best time to see the sunset with nice city view.
It took just about five minutes to get Governors Island from Manhattan by ferry. Nice short trip.
The Beach is exciting free music event with nice Manhattan view.

Recently I have been working on my project, DINNER in NY and through this project I met one family. I shot a 9 months old baby's dinner. She had already started to eat baby solid food as dinner, and the mother nursed her before she went to bed.
The moment when the mother was giving her breast to the baby was so quiet and peaceful. I felt so much love of the mother.

Made Bed for Kitten

We went to IKEA in Brooklyn to buy a busket, a pillow and a throw, to make a cat bed for our kitten. She loves this comfortable bed a lot. She is sleeping and playing on the bed.
We named her "MiMi" which was my first cat name. I hope she love this name.

Coney Island Pier

Coney Island is a peninsula, formerly an island, in southernmost Brooklyn, New York City, USA, with a beach on the Atlantic Ocean. There is a pier on the beach and many people hang out on it, fishing, reading a book, chatting etc. On weekdays Coney Island and the pier are so quiet in the strong contrast to being live with people on weekend. There are few people who are fishing on the pier and walking on the boardwalk.

The Pearl of Africa - The Republic of Uganda

"The Pearl of Africa - The Republic of Uganda" was my first solo exhibition, held at Konica Minolta Plaza in Tokyo, Japan from July 2nd through 11th 2008.

I had a chance to visit the Republic of Uganda in 2007, and it was my first visit to Africa. My conjecture was positively crused and I was charmed into Uganda. The Republic of Uganda is called "The Pearl of Africa" and I took the pictures of the pearl that I found in this time.
